Melissa Hozack, President and CEO of TruMe Whole Health and Co-Owner of Redcliff Pharmasave, is featured in the November-December issue of Pharmacy Practice + Business.
Hozack, a pharmacist by profession, has worked in the field of therapeutic nutrition for nine years. She started researching the subject when she embarked on her own weight loss journey.
“I had 100 pounds that I wanted to lose,” Hozack told The News. “I didn’t know it was that much back then.”
In order to lose weight in a safe and healthy way, Hozack had to make some lifestyle changes. After achieving her weight loss goals, she wanted to share what she had learned with others.
“I have helped 1,150 people now,” she said. Inside the store, she has a chart that she updates daily with the total number of pounds her patients have lost over the past nine years. As of Wednesday, that number surpassed 47,000.
Hozack now works full time to coach individuals on the best way to make healthy choices, not only to start weight loss, but also to improve overall health. Her main focus is low-carb nutrition, but she works with each patient to create a program tailored to their needs.
“We call it therapeutic nutrition, so we think of food as medicine,” she said. “It’s not just a diet; it really is a lifestyle.
In addition to coaching, Hozack is President and CEO of TruMe Whole Foods, a company that makes products that promote healthy eating and living.
“I just couldn’t find some of the things I necessarily wanted (in food), so that’s kind of where I got the idea for TruMe,” Hozack said. “And (I thought) maybe other people were looking for the same thing.”
TruMe offers a range of products, including Amino Acids, Stevia Drops, Essential Oils, Peppermint Oil Roller, Shakers, and Spice Blends, available in 165 locations across Canada and the United States.
“I hope that by the end of 2021 we will have 30 different products. We have a lot of launches coming up, ”Hozack said.
In an effort to keep patients focused on their health goals, Hozack often adds interactive elements to its programs. She challenged patients to create new recipes using TruMe products and encouraged them to share posts celebrating their weight loss and health outcomes. This week, her patients will take part in a 12-week “Amazing Race” event, where they must visit sites around town while following a low-carb lifestyle. The goal is to lose 25 pounds in 12 weeks.
Hozack supervises a group of over 500 people, some of whom are his active patients and some of whom have already completed his program. Hozack believes his patients are regaining hope through the programs, activities and groups.
“We care about your health. Pharmacists have always been the most accessible healthcare professionals because you can always come in and ask for advice, we can help you with a lot of things that way. to be from TruMe Whole Health. We just want to try to reach people and help them stay healthy, “she said.
TruMe products are available at various locations in Redcliff and Medicine Hat, including Pharmasave, Nutters, Co-op, and Source for Sports.
